What is WEA-PAC?
WEA-PAC is the Washington Education Association’s non-partisan political action committee. How does politics affect us and our students? Well, when we become educators, we don't necessarily think that our jobs and schools are political. However, since funding, testing, medical insurance, graduation requirements, certification legislation and policy comes from who we elect, quickly we learn that educators' voices must be involved in decision making to ensure what's best for our students and our profession. Shouldn't educators who serve kids impact the laws that affect everything we do? WEA-PAC's sole mission is to support pro-public education initiatives (class size, simple majority) candidates to office who understand the needs of our Federal Way students, high quality school environments in our great Federal Way schools, and the collective bargaining rights that facilitate both of those cornerstones. The majority of FWEA members contribute a nominal amount per month to support the pro-public education, WEA-PAC endorsed candidates. Our local FWEA members participate in WEA-PAC recommendation processes for local legislative and statewide races, including our Federal Way school board elections. As a nonpartisan organization, FWEA supports people and policies that are good for students, public education and public educators. We are active in supporting levies, issues, and candidates at the local and state levels for pro-education outcomes to improve our schools Together our 95,000 WEA voices create a powerful and credible narrative to advance legislation and policies that benefit our students, public schools, and school employees such as reducing class sizes, fully funding public education (aka McCleary), and improving compensation and benefits.
