We had our first Association Representatives meeting on Monday, and there were more of us than ever before!
We were very pleased to have our Special Education Representative Dacca Michaels, announce the Special Education settlement for Special Education teachers to recognize the loss of planning and duty-free lunches sacrificed for constant student intervention. While there are still small details to work out, this is strong recognition for the critical work Special Ed teachers contribute to our community. We commend the good work and dedication of the FWEA Special Education class size committee. The district and association had been working collaboratively on this settlement since last Spring.
Hopefully you've attended your building's 10 minute meeting. In addition to events and updates, every month we cover contract language that is up to all of us to understand and feel confidant with. As my fellow union friend Kristi says, "rights you don't exercise are rights you don't have."
Many of us came together for our Recruitment and Retention brainstorming night. It was moving. We will be hosting a larger follow-up event soon-stay tuned.
I'll be in Washington, DC next week at trainings and advocating on our behalf. I'll keep you posted in "The Federal Way Education Association" members' Facebook page. I've been in 7 schools this week listening to you, seeing old friends and excitedly meeting new members so I'm ready with a strong Federal Way narrative to share with Congress and fellow educators across the nation.
Take care, and have a restful weekend,
